The founder of Kids Computer Kamp grew up in a single mother's home and understands how difficult it is to make ends meet.

As a single mother, you have to work a job that probably doesn't pay as well as your male counter-part, you have to raise a family and if you take a moment to breath, to relax, get away for even a moment, let alone for a day or two, family and social pressures, even legal pressures can make such attempts to regain some composure, peace, (and sanity) in your life a risky venture indeed.

While a lot of men might think that is an over-dramitization, if you're a single mother, you know and we know, it is an understatement of the stress you are subjected to.

So, to add to your burden, every three to five years you need to buy a new computer for your children, or 'they will be left behind' with old, obsolete gear, their friends will taunt them and you'll feel even worse.

Let's fix that right here and right now! Whether you are male or female, it is your responsibility to do the best job as a parent you can with the tools you have. You do not have to run out and buy the latest gizmo for your kids to make their lives normal or to prove you are a good parent.

When I was growing up, at around age 10, ABC Eyewitness News interviewed me and a friend of a similar age. The program aired way back when and it focused on the problems of being a child of a single parent and what we, the kids, felt were important. Let me tell you, it isn't the gizmos that are important, it's spending quality time with your parents, your friends, your teachers and most especially for inner-city kids, getting out into nature; camping, hiking, going to the beach or even a park with a big grassy hill. These were the best memories I had as a child and if you reflect back on your own childhood, if you remember 'the green scenes' I bet you'll be smiling before you get to the end of this sentence.

Back to the subject of computers:

If you want more time and money (gas is so expensive these days) to get away and have more time to do that by working in a well paying job, you need to go back to school and get the skills that pay. "WHO HAS TIME FOR SCHOOOL!" you cry, "I AM ALREADY WORKING 60 HOURS A WEEK AND STILL DON'T HAVE ENOUGH MONEY!"

That's the plight of most single mothers and there are a couple of things you can do to fix that.

  1. STOP buying your kids the brand-new-jiffy-spiffy gizmo. Get your bikes at police auctions, buy less junk food and more fresh veggies for the fridge (they are cheaper and healthier) and get your computers free. We'll show you how.

  2. Take the classes here at this site from home. Kids Computer Kamp has a network of mothers, just like you, who can help you get through them. Once you have done that and developed the high tech skills described at the Kids Computer Kamp Labs you can get a better job that pays $25.00 - $100.00 an hour and work less hours to get all the bills squared away.

  3. While you are taking the classes, network with social agencies in your community. This doesn't mean go there with your hand out. We are goingto teach you how to go there and give them free computers too. They will look forward to your visits and when it comes time to get that high-tech job, they'll have plenty of friends and contacts to make sure your job search is fast, effective and pays off quickly.

  4. Follow the instructions on the right and don't give up. Read the step-by-step overview and it isn't that difficult to do or time consumming. As you progress, you are developing both your techie skills and the network of people who are going to help you land that high paying job.

  5. Once you reach that level you have choices; you can run ads that describe your high-tech skills and fix other people's computers for cash, you could take more of our labs and develop your network skills and set up wifi networks, learn to become a web developer (we have those classes too - all free) or perhaps just develop a website and sell some arts, crafts or service (i.e. legal research) that you know how to do.

STEP-BY-STEP Overview

  • Make a list of battered women's shelters in your area. Also lists of youth centers and senior centers. That should take you less than 30 minutes.

  • Call them and explain that you repair broken computers and donate them to such agencies and would like to know if they need any for the people they serve. 99% of them will be begging you to drop by.

  • Once you know what sort of agencies you are going to be working with email us and we'll set up a page just for your charitable activities and community. Make sure you tell us about yourself. Here is a fine example.

  • Run one ad in Craigslist.org and run several in CraigsWorld.org such as the one on the right. And every week (or even every 2-3 days), delete your old ad and start a new one so you are always on top. Include the url to the page we set up for you and get ready for the flood of PCs

    Give them a receipt for their PCs and invite them to attend the lab you host.

  • Once you have some gear, follow the step-by-step lab and you'll soon be fixing PCs faster than you ever knew you could,

  • Take the working PCs to the agencies you promised to help. Keep the a few of the good ones for your kids.

  • Every now and then a real gem will come in. You'll know how to swap hard drives and data, so put your data into the nicer PC and give some agency your PC.

  • After a month or two there will be so many community leaders begging you to be 'their friend' and your skills will be developed so well, you may not even have to do a job search. The jobs may come to you!

Here is a sample ad you can try in Craigslist.org. We suggest you change the text a bit to suit your personality and to make sure you aren't 'matching' someone elses ad, since craigslist will ban you for that. If you want to run ads in a more liberal place, try craigsworld.org which has a more friendly ad policy, especially for single moms (hey, the founder of this program owns it, so....)

Naturally, unless you are hosting a free PCs for Kids class at Martha's Vineyard you'll need to change a few things in that ad, but you get the idea.
