Kid's Pirate Kamp!

Free PCs for Kids? We've been hosting these labs since 1983 and have requests in developing countries to bring our labs to women and children centers, orphanages and schools. We're also surfers, sailors, skiers, hikers, bikers, pilots and NASA engineers. Then the question became; 'How do we put all that together; schools, nature, the outdoors and computers? Hey we can even throw in some astronomy and celestial nagivation lessons!'

Electricity was the key. Without it, developing regions struggle to come of age. There are villages in the Pacific Island chains that have a single generator just to run 1 light or perhaps a TV and VCR for 50 or more people. It's difficult to envision even a semi-modern school without power, let alone a computer lab.

Enter the Wind Gen Zen Project supplying free electricity to remote regions. We got the idea when a HAM RADIO operator purchased these blades to do radio stratosphere bounces off remote mountain tops and figured we could use the same technology (our blade and wind generator designs) to light up undeveloped coastal areas and provide water, power, an internet hit (via our HAM Band Web Servers currently under development), a school and a nature preserve, all paid for by a small 'resort' style location complete with a few beach bungalows and a main club house with restaurant, cantina, lobby and of course a school for the local kids!

If all proceeds from access to the Nature Preserve were given straight to the region's government and the staff at the school ran the facility it could easily pay for the construction, the staff to manage it and the supplies to keep it going.

We ran the idea past a few folks with experience in these matters and here's what they had to say:

  • Fred Schoenlank; Building and Planning Engineer and Professional Draftsman said 'Sounds great. Count me in. We can do this with styrafoam and concrete.'

  • Collin Tiura; Developer, Grading/Surveying Professional and Globe Trotter said 'Sounds great. I know this guy who has surveyed the coast of....'

  • Tim Bitts; Developer, General Contractor and Sailor said 'I surf! Sounds great. Let me know what I can do...'

  • Jeremy; Surf Camp Instructor and Coastal Traveller said 'Sounds great. I know the perfect spot in...'

  • Mark; Mortage Banking Expert, Sailor and Traveller said 'Let me see more. This sounds kewl. Ya know, National Geographic featured this guy last month in Gabon who is doing something like this and...

...and what we figured out is everyone thinks it's a great idea so now we need to:
  1. Discuss long term strategy and current management roles.

  2. Develop a rough plan and general format for these types of nature preserve/school/resort sites.

  3. Make a list of potential locations and select a few for final consideration, including photos, maps and a discussion of regional habitats and local demographics.

  4. Draft a rough outline of a prospectus for potential customers and investors to review based on specific locations.

  5. Discuss funding methods until the 'resort' revenue stream is developed.

  6. Refine the strategy, literature and overall plan for presentation.

  7. Discuss the proposed 'resort' aspects with Travel Agencies to confirm '...they can sell this type of resort' and then give them the tools (brochures) to do that.

  8. Present the stategy and plan to a local government.

  9. If approved (land grant), develop the electrical facilities (wind power).

  10. Develop water de-salinization driven from the newly installed local electric grid.

  11. Begin grading and contruction on the main lodge, school, restaurant etc. as revenue streams are developed.

  12. Continue construction, adding bungalows as revenue continues to increase.

  13. Staff the facility; this group can be made up of Botanists, Marina Professionals, Anthropologists etc.

  14. Work out the bugs (no-see-ums) as they are found.

  15. Begin bringing in the scholastic and computer supplies for the kids!

  16. Spend some time enjoying that great surf break!!! Yahoooo!
